Why Install a Home EV Charger?
A dedicated home EV charger delivers up to 7x faster charging than a standard 3-pin plug, costs as little as £4-5 for a full charge on a typical off-peak tariff, and protects your vehicle's battery with smart charging management.
Public charging costs between 40-80p per kWh. Home charging on an EV-specific tariff can cost as little as 7-10p per kWh. Over a typical 10,000-mile year, that's a saving of £800-£1,200 compared to public charging alone.
ElectroSafe is an OZEV-approved installer, meaning we meet the government's strict standards for EV charger installation. We handle the full process — site survey, supply, installation, consumer unit upgrades, and certification.
We install all major charger brands including Ohme, Zappi, Easee, Pod Point, Wallbox, and Tesla Wall Connector. We'll recommend the best unit for your vehicle, driving habits, and electricity tariff.
The Risks of Incorrect EV Charger Installation
Charging an electric vehicle from a standard 13A domestic socket draws up to 2.3kW continuously for 12+ hours. Standard sockets are not designed for sustained high loads — this causes overheating, melted terminals, and fire risk.
Unqualified installation of a dedicated charger creates equally dangerous problems. Undersized cabling, incorrect fuse ratings, missing earth rods, and non-compliant consumer unit connections are common issues with DIY or unregistered installations.
An incorrectly installed EV charger can void your vehicle warranty, your home insurance, and the charger manufacturer's warranty simultaneously. Three protections lost through one bad decision.
Properties with older consumer units may lack the capacity for an additional high-load circuit. Installing a charger without upgrading the consumer unit can cause persistent tripping, affecting your entire home's electrical supply.
OZEV grant eligibility requires installation by an approved installer using an approved charger. Using an unapproved installer disqualifies you from financial support and removes the safety net of regulated workmanship standards.

EV Charger Installation: Technical Details and Options
Home EV chargers are available in two main power levels: 3.6kW (16A) and 7.2kW (32A). Most UK homes with a single-phase supply are best suited to a 7.2kW charger, which provides approximately 25-30 miles of range per hour of charging.
The charger unit is typically mounted on an external wall near the parking position. Cable runs from the consumer unit to the charger location vary by property — we route cables through loft spaces, under floors, or along external walls using weather-resistant conduit.
Every installation requires a dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, protected by a Type A or Type B RCD and appropriately rated MCB. We use 6.0mm² or 10.0mm² T&E cable depending on cable run length and voltage drop calculations.
An earth rod (earth electrode) is installed for most EV charger installations to provide an additional earth path. This is a regulatory requirement for installations using Type A RCDs and provides an extra layer of safety.
Smart chargers are now required by law for all new installations (Electric Vehicles Smart Charge Points Regulations 2021). These must be capable of off-peak scheduling, random delay, and demand-side response. All chargers we install meet these requirements.
Tethered chargers have a permanently attached cable — convenient for single-vehicle households. Untethered (socketed) chargers accept any Type 1 or Type 2 cable — better for households with multiple EVs or future vehicle changes.
For commercial and workplace installations, we offer multi-point solutions with load management systems. These distribute available power across multiple chargers, preventing supply overload while maximising charging availability for all users.
Solar PV integration is available with compatible chargers such as the Zappi. This allows you to charge your vehicle using excess solar generation — further reducing your running costs and carbon footprint.
